61) Message boards : MilkyWay@home Science : SDSS Stripe 82 searches (Message 3838)

Post:
Hi Nate/Travis/Dave...was wondering why we haven't seen any more of these searches since the initial attempt failed and caused numerous errors. Have these errors been worked out yet and when will we be seeing more of these?

There is a run test applications option on everyones account page and I would be willing to help test to get a production version out.

Regards-Jeff

There is nothing more annoying then seeing a quad core machine sitting idle waiting for work...not to mention the thermal variances that it undergoes between running at full load and running at idle...I know there are complexities of the projects computer servers that I don't know about and that their system has to handle the load of many users, but is it really that difficult to supply a steady stream of work...of course barring any major system meltdowns as they happen and are usually unforeseen.

I have caught my computer in idle no less then a dozen times in the last 24 hours as it waits for the project server to send out a new batch of work (20 WU's) that lasts less then 25 mins on this machine.

There is nothing more annoying than to see people complain about this kind of thing when there is a score of worthy projects with regular work that can be used as a backup......the good of the project outweighs the good of the user.

Lucky you...I found 8-3737's on 4 systems this morning with a total wasted time of 35 hrs :(

I think the assimilator is the key here...when fixed we will get validation and work as normal ;)

As for dual booting, that's an option I guess, but I think I'd be switching around quite a bit, considering I do a lot of DirectX programming as well. (not to mention some GLSL stuff that's very easy to test in windows)

Run Windows in virtualbox under Linux :)

Doing that for Cels@home and doing very nicely with no dropoff (Its a win only project atm) :)

are there optimized clients for this project

thanx--rene

Yes all the non-mac apps have already been optimized at the project level and you d/l them automatically from the project. They are not 3rd party like Seti.

We haven't had an update about this in over a month....I assume Travis has been busy with this and the multi-cores on this project are anxiously waiting. :)

How are the lastest genetic searches going as far as quality?

Will you ever use the particle swarm searches again?
Or did that just not work?

The key concept is "server share" what works for one may very well overload the server if too many quads get on this bus. Think son.

Voltron

Son? :p Ok dad, I see the point you want to make ;)

Hmmmmm 1st crash in weeks overnight .....hmmmm.....Guy I don't know where 'dad' is but down here in Texas and sw US thats just the way we talk(watch some old westerns) :)

I'm not getting any new WU's even though the server says it has available WU's...

Is your work cache set to high?....5 days or more? Don't have work cache set higher than deadlines. I am getting work on all hosts just fine btw.

I don't think there is a minimum....as long as the project supports the os and you can meet the deadline are the only requirements I know of.But cheez man the meter spins like mad not doing much....if your pockets are that deep go buy another host :)

Until I saw this thread, it had not sunk in that Milkyway is using the reported results to generate the next work to be sent out.

I run off-line, and make a connection to the internet no more often than twice a day. Meaning no matter how fast my computer, nor how short your deadlines, the very SOONEST that I can submit a result is 12 hours after downloading the WU. [If higher-priority work from other projects supersedes Milkyway work, it'll be 24 hours.]

Should I stop participating in Milkyway ?
.

No-The project team has stated all results returned before the deadline are valuable-keep on trucking dude :)
