1) Message boards : Number crunching : How to not Get Multiple CPU Units (Message 71868)

I don't WANT to get the work units that use 4 or 8 CPUs. I always abort them. Is there a way to not get them at all?

I'm getting a bunch of WUs that complete in 4 or 5 seconds. I did get a new computer a few weeks ago but nothing super high end. It is showing as "complete" and not an error, but is this right?

Well, my computer died Wednesday - fried motherboard. I got a new one hooked up yesterday which is 5+ years newer and much faster so things might work better with BOINC now.

Do you have 11 virtual cores setup?

I have no idea what that means.

Now it seems the tasks are smaller and a week is given to complete.

Well, the previously mentioned one is due tomorrow at 4:30 pm about - nearly 12 hours so far and less than an hour to go. A new one also started with a given time of about 8 hours. The app apparently works.

It's been running now about 2 hours 45 min, time left is a bit over 24 hours. It started at just over 37 hours. At that rate it will likely be a little more than 8 hours total. I do run 2 projects at once (other one switches between World Community and Climate Prediction. I'm also usually on my computer (I'm working on getting disability and still getting unemployment) and turn it off when I go to bed or am away from home.)

I got the sse2 one - I also took it out of the folder and put the contents directly in the MW folder this time. The "time left" will get longer for a bit but then drop by at least a minute and a half. Overall it seems it will get done in about 1/4 the time given (a bit over 9 hours.)

I tried one and it didn't help. Maybe I didn't put it in right - I'm not very computer literate. It predicts about 37 hours but ends up taking much longer - a lot of times it takes more than a second for the time to drop by 1 second. Before I was only aborting when it got to more time left then there was until the deadline. Eventually I just aborted if it was a more than 30 hour project.

Mine when they've been coming in roughly the last month have been about 37 hours. Before that they were usually around 5.

Well, I aborted everything and have it set not to get new wu's from milky way. If they want it set that only rich people who have advanced computers and/or can afford an extra computer to just run BOINC then the hell with them for being so elitist. I'll keep my spare computing power for cosmology, climate prediction, World Community Grid and the LHC project (if lhc ever gives any wu's) or maybe join a new one. If they decide to let normal people participate again maybe I'll come back.

I downloaded that SSE 3 thing and it's still not enough time. Is there a way to set it to not get such huge WU's?

Thing is the very idea of BOINC is for people to be able to help science through running it it the background while doing other things/while computer is not being used. Not to have a computer dedicated to just running boinc projects.

Ugh, the crashing. Climate Prediction gives HUGE WU's but gives more than a year to complete. Unfortunately, it ends up "computation error" more often than not.

I've also been informed my Pentium 4, 3.4GHz processor is plenty for this project.

Or for those of us not computer literate enough to have any idea of what you are talking about...

Matt, your 3.4GHz P4 is SSE3 capable. If you go to the following web site http://www.arkayn.us/milkyway/index.html you will find links to SSE2 and SSE3 optimised applications in the top line. Download either one as there is no real difference in speed between SSE2 and SSE3.

If you are using the default install locations and haven't changed them, then stop BOINC and extract the files to

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\projects\milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway

then restart BOINC.

You will be amazed at the speed up compared to the stock project application.

OK I've tried that, no new project yet to see. Up until a couple weeks ago it was finishing with plenty of time.

I've been aborting every project for weeks and suspending Milky Way. This is going to keep happening until the deadlines given are realistic. There is simply no way to get such huge workloads done in 3 days - unless maybe you let your computer on 24 hours a day and don't actually use it. It's gotten to be worse than cosmology@home. If they need something that big done that quick, put it on a supercomputer not boinc.
