Are these only test units just to verify the validator? I've had 2 issues with them - Completed, validation inconclusive and when the consensus does come in, I get - Completed, can't validate due to the settings of - max # of error/total/success tasks 1, 6, 1 errors Too many success results

Ahh, thats the issue. I was wondering why WUs weren't coming back for additional validation. This should be fixed with new WUs.

Thanks, I'll give 'em a try after I quit banging on Slicker's server.

Bye, have fun, see ya later.

NO wait, I am already have a presence there hahaha.

Don't worry team, I am here for the science, so I will stay!
Must admit, haven't seen the old nothing then 140% then count backwards routine for a few weeks now. ~2:37 on the 4 x aircooled 5970's and ~2:20 on the 2 x water cooled ones.

Lots of luck. Just checked your time and they've increased to 160 seconds from 108 seconds for the same credits. I believe that's a 48% reduction in effort. Don't take my word, just have a look.

The Wu's have increased by about 1/3 but the Credit hasn't, right now Milkyway Credit is lower than Collatz or DNETC ... ???

I'm seeing a 70% increase in time with no increase in credits. Guess it's time to go to Collatz. Cards run cooler on single precision anyay.

Hi,
Ive just re-installed the original app 0.21 only to discover that theres a huge problem going on just as i decided to change the settings ( typical )
i've now downloaded some new work but it wont start doing anything
the counter counts but the progress bar stays at 0% completed

Ian

I use only the stock 0.21 app on GPUs only (10). They display similar behavior, but if you let them run, They'll eventually go to 143% and count backwards to 100%. With these WUs, my GPUs are paying much better. When your WUs complete, just view the results of the WU on your account.

I ended up aborting the 20 tasks as they all did the same thing, right now I am crunching Collatz as they go fine.

This is either another bad search, or something the .20b app cannot handle.

[edit]
Seeing that you are using a CPU app and I am running a GPU app, I am going to say that it is a bad search.

I was aborting a few of them until the progress bar finally moved (above 100% and counted backwards). When they finally reported, they took almost twice as long as the "normal" WUs, and paid a liitle better. I just let 'em run!

BTW, GPUs only with no app_info file. I just let the stock app run!!

i7, 5870, Win7-64, ccc 9.11, boinc 6.10.18, attach to mw, d/l one wu, start crunching... with cpu.

AFAIK, MW works just fine with this combo. I have BOINC 6.10.24, ATI 5870, Win7 64 bit, 9.11 drivers and just added the 3 optomized files to my MW folder (from the available web sites) and it fired up immediately. This was a new installation. My only difference is I'm running an AMD chip, which shouldn't matter.

3 work properly. 1+2+3, 1+2+4, etc. 4 does not work.

Have you tried taking them out of the cross fire mode and putting dummy plugs into the 3 cards that don't support the monitor?

This is how they are created. BTW, I think I read that you can use 50-150 OHM resistors, but mine are 68 OHM from Radio Shack. I think a card of 5 resistors was less than $2 USD.

There's only one GTX260 running per machine. OK, the WinXP box has a 9400GT but it's for display usage only because it created errors on both Seti and Collatz.

Both machines have 4GB of RAM installed. And before someone starts to complain, yes I'm aware of the fact that WinXP 32Bit has only access to 3GB! I saw that I forgot to mention RAM in my system overview below.

But how could a CUDA application be concerned by amount system memory? OK, there's a small part that is running on CPU but is that of any interest? And no matter if I have run the MW app standalone or with others, it fails in every situation. Only the short ones finish with valid results.

I don't know the technical details of how GPU applications use system memory or use it to remap the video memory, I just know that they do. Errors were reported a while ago with the Collatz ATI application from people who were running multiple 1GB graphics memory ATI GPUs and had only 1 GB of system memory. More recently someone with only 2GB of memory also got those buffer errors when trying to run 2 HD 5970 cards. The solution in both cases was to limit the amount of video memory used by the application with the use of the r parameter.

I know Collatz ATI is a different application from MilkyWay ATI or CUDA and is more dependent on video card memory bandwidth. However system memory would still need to be used and when the MilkyWay WU is 4 times longer it possiubly uses more than previously.

Because I had noticed that some who reported no problems even with multiple nVidia cards had 8GB or 12GB of system memory and some of those who were reporting problems had 3GB reported as available or 4GB available with multiple GPU cores I reasoned that memory buffer issues may be causing a problem. Could be wrong, just raising the possibility to try and help narrow down what is causing these errors for some while others are unaffected.

Therefore it is possible that those that have a large amount of system memory installed and use a Windows 64-bit operating system may not encounter these errors.

I also remember someone had to use r=20 in the app_info file to keep WUs from erroring out. These people may not use the app_info file though? I believe the default is 30?

Hello ganja, can you please post the bios version of your GTX260 cards? Thank you.

Let me ask to the public again it someone knows if the MW app can be run in some kind of debug mode?

Dude, there's a config file you can create to track operations of WUs, but I've never used it. This is the link:

As to RPI giving us money -- you don't know too much about academia :P We receive support from labstaff (which comes through RPI), and we're located on campus, but when it comes to actual dollars to spend on equipment or students, all that has to come from grants.

So what happend to the donations we gave to the project? Did it buy hardware and jobs or donuts?

This smells like bullshit!!!

This is the letter I received when I donated:

Dear Donator:

Thank you for your generous donation to the MilkyWay@Home Fund of the Dudley Observatory. Below is a summary of your donation:

15) Message boards : Number crunching : I can't run MW if there are ATI and NVIDIA GPUs installed both (Message 33737)

Hello!
today i add nvidia card to my system and boinc refuses to run MW on secondary ATI card then.
boinc told: 26.11.2009 0:32:10 NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GT 240 (driver version 19562, CUDA version 3000, compute capability 1.2, 1024MB, 257 GFLOPS peak)

and MW gets none WU.

before this upgrade it was all ok. boinc told GPU 0: Ati .... and MW starts to get and crunch WUs.

so, i think this is because BOINC does't recognize another GPU (ati).
what i have to do to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

From what I could find, if you don't want to run a particular card with 6.10.13+, you can add a config file. I don't know how or where it goes since I don't use it. You will need a dummy plug on the secondary ATI slot and extend it into your desktop or plug in another monitor!

In Boinc 6.10.13+ you can disable any GPU from use by Boinc by putting a line in your cc_config.txt file (you can ignore more than one if you want).

NVIDIA -
Disable first NVIDIA GPU use:
<ignore_cuda_dev>0</ignore_cuda_dev>

Disable second NVIDIA GPU use:
<ignore_cuda_dev>1</ignore_cuda_dev>

ATI -
Disable first ATI GPU use:
<ignore_ati_dev>0</ignore_ati_dev>

Disable second ATI GPU use:
<ignore_ati_dev>1</ignore_ati_dev>

Also found this. It might be placed in the high level BOINC folder, I don't know.

Then why is there a need for that central server which all projects have to go to get the calculated credit ? This new scheme doesn't even take into account that some 64 bit apps are twice as fast as their 32 counterparts or if we're doing DP, integers or SP...those will get leveled as well.

Thank you Crunch3r for reading the new credit scheme.

Suppose a project has an app with only a GPU version, so there's no CPU version to act as a sanity check. If we grant credit based only on GPU peak speed, the project will grant much more credit per GPU hour than other projects, violating limited project neutrality - so this wouldn't apply here.

A solution to this: if an app has only GPU versions, then for each version V we let S(V) be the average scaling factor for that GPU type among projects that do have both CPU and GPU versions. This factor is obtained from a central BOINC server. V's jobs are then scaled by S(V) as above.

So the degree of hosing is S(V), according to a central BOINC server controlled by UCB & DA and minions?

I guess we can expect a 50% reduction in credit because these new cards are extremely fast! You heard the writting on the wall here first!! DA will never stand for this type of technological advance without penalizing everyone else!!
