OK, Time for a little tough love.
It's time for:....
a. Project split GPU/CPU
b. Server repair (probably not the problem)
c. Server replacement or upgrade
IMO a or c or a and c is the best solution
You've had donations ( however no statement has been issued as to how well the donations went) and offers have been made for hardware donations (i've not seen any requests for these).
What can we do to help you help us?
We want to help and I believe we've shown that. How are we supposed to do that without requests for specific items or goals we need to reach in order to accomplish specific upgrades.
Once again, help us to help you.

Randy

I believe I asked this same question in another thread (though I can't fid it). I also did the same analysis : donations for a new server for the GPU site and how is the current donations going for funding? No answer. I guess in times of recession, the best answer is no answer?????

I think the new version of the GPU app is making the server pretty strained again. I'll see what I can do but I'm not sure how much faster we can get her going :D

It just got a lot better some minutes ago!

Hope it stays that way.

I reduced the feeder sleep time to 1 second (down from 2). Sadly I think this is the most we can make the feeder work, so if we go through any more extensive optimizations or have a large influx of users we're really going to need to get another server machine.

So can't you start asking for donations again for new equipment? Did the last rally cover the expenses until grants are received? Never heard if the project could stay running until the grants were received.

Maybe the new server could be on Milkyway GPU?

[I've also just finished submitting a paper to the escience 2009 conference ( http://www.escience2009.org/ ). In the next couple weeks I'll know if it was accepted or not, and if so I'll link that in the science forums and the publications section -- this paper contains our most recent computer science research with the project.

Good luck to you and thanks to all who participated in making everything happen crunching on this site!!

I believe the saying in the USofA is it doesn't matter the amount, but that you did donate. I'm sure it's all appreciated, right people?

I believe you can safely broaden the geographical basis for that sentiment.

I could broaden the geographical basis for this statement if I knew it to be true. I can't really speak for the world, but from what I have experienced in my 57 years of life, I can almost say this is true from where I live. In time of need, everyone gives what they can. When ignoring my mass ignorance of the rest of the world, I'll assume it's true everywhere!

I go through that all day long with my i7, the rest of my Box's run fine with no input but the i7 is a real pain. I'm thinking of shutting off AQUA before I go to bed tonight but I don't even think that will work, I think it will just be sitting there idle when I get up in the morn ...

I had a measly AMD 3800+ 939 chip with a 3850 AGP card keep doing this also. I had BOINC 6.6.36 installed, but went back to 6.6.28 and everything has worked just fine since. I can't explain it, but it worked for me.

Hello again,

The server should be running nicer now (let me know if it isn't), we went from having 4 runs [2.5deg 2s (2): 2.5deg 3s (2)] to 8 [2.5deg 3s (4): 5deg 2s (2): 5deg 3s (2)]. So there are WUs in total, more 3 stream runs, and more 5 degree stripes.

On a thread-related note-- yes, we do go out of the way to make you guys happy with the server speed. But I think this is part of our relationship-- we keep you happy by giving you work and credits, you keep us happy by providing the computing power we need. If keeping your boxes busy is the price to keep you crunching for us; well, that's a small price for 430 TFlops :)

Cheers,
John Vickers

This is all well and good, IMHO, if it's work needed to be done and not just make-work to appease the masses. I have a small sum in GPU cards and PSU upgrades and would not feel that good just to keep them busy on work that wasn't necessary. Thanks.

Hi Haksu

I had .NET 3.5 installed on my machine, but it was suspected by CP that it didn't install correctly. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled it successfully and still had the file absent message. My error, or lack of undersanding, was my chipset driver wasn't updated before I insalled the video driver (the 8.12 AGP hotfix). Only when I updated the chipset driver it informed me I had to reinstall the video driver. Everything is running fine now, thanks to a lot of help and time from the people in this forum.

Happy crunching =;^)

...the AGP fast write was disabled. According to ATIs help page, this allows the CPU to wtire directly to the GPU. I have no idea what that's for, so I left it off..

"This BIOS feature controls the AGP bus' Fast Write capability. Fast Write is a feature which accelerates memory write transactions from the chipset to the AGP device.

Fast Write allows the AGP device act like a PCI device. This allows it to bypass the main memory and directly access the data which improves AGP read performance. However AGP write performance is not affected.

While this feature may appear to greatly improve the performance of AGP graphics cards, its actual performance effect is quite negligible. Also, it reduces the overclockability of the graphics card when enabled.

Therefore, if you do not intend to overclock your graphics card, it is recommended that you enable AGP Fast Write for potentially better AGP read performance. However, you should definitely disable it if you intend to overclock your graphics card, or if any of your PCI cards start acting funny."

(source)

Thanks for the info Ageless, I'll keep it in mind since I haven't OCd any of my GPUs. I believe they'll fry soon enough.

And the good news is...... the ATI_SSE2 opti app is working & producing results!!! What an adventure!! I don't know what the lessons learned here are, but I suppose that if you start with a mobo with no drivers, don't add any "fluff" (eSata PCI card) and video drivers until the mobo chipset drivers are current!!

Thanks again to all for your time & help!! I wish we could have a beer & pizza party!!!

Hope this works. Good learning curve for all of us!

Right at the moment Martin, that sounds great =8^) All hardware monitoring devices inform me my AGP card is on the AGP bus running @ 8x (but still have DirectX 10.0)!! ATIs SmartGart kicked in and set the optimum performance for me, but the AGP fast write was disabled. According to ATIs help page, this allows the CPU to wtire directly to the GPU. I have no idea what that's for, so I left it off. The AGP read & write are on, so I'm not too concerned with it right now.

Currently I'm waiting for the CPU to finish up its MW WU & I'm going to attempt to switch over to the ATI_SSE2 app.

Thanks CP, Ageless and all the rest for your time and help. I'll soon know if the GPU app will start corectly.

Post:
If I remember it right, the AGP controller driver has to be installed before the graphics driver. Maybe that is the culprit. One looses quite a bit of performance if the AGP port runs in the PCI compatibility mode and the graphics driver may even not work correctly. So could you check that you have the appropriate northbridge driver (containing the AGP controller) installed?

Usually these drivers get installed together with the rest of the chipset drivers.

Also, if an embedded video chip is on the motherboard, but it is disabled (in the BIOS, by a jumper or by plugging in an actual card, depends on motherboard how that's done), then this can throw off readings of the AGP bus. The other weekend I was fighting with a motherboard that has a GF 7900 GS on it, which would show everything enabled, but for the GF.

I solved it there by using DriverCleaner Pro to delete all motherboard and ATI drivers, then reinstalling all motherboard drivers manually, and the earlier 180.06 drivers, before upgrading to the newer drivers.

It is possible that this is a similar case.

Donnie, what's your motherboard model?

I think CP hit on it. Here's the deal - I purchased the Gigabyte GA-K8U refurbished from Gigabyte; no onboard VGA, no driver CD, nada. Just the mobo.

I installed an eSata PCI card to use with my Seagate external drive for backup. This device hid the ULI (mobo) mass contoller from me and Windows installed (fresh install of doz) the eSata PCI driver. God I hate 2-3 hours of updates from Windows. The CD driver that came with the ATI HD3850 AGP card had Cat 8.1 on it. I knew this wouldn't run the ATI GPU app, so I attempted to install the normal Cat 8.12 driver. Well since this was an AGP card, I got the dreaded "your hardware/system doesn't support the driver". That's when I read about the AGP hotfix and installed it, to no avail.

To make a long story short, I was going to update the Bios last night and somehow chose the reset BIOS and the mobo wouldn't post. I shut the PC down, opened it up, jumped the CMOS, made the time/date BIOS changes, and left everything else the same. While I had the PC apart to jump the CMOS, I removed the eSata card (just a hunch). When Windows booted up, it detected the ULI mass storage controller that had no driver. I downloaded the current driver and installed it and it informed me I should had done this prior to installing the AGP driver. It also informed me I needed to reinstall the AGP driver for everything to work properly.

Needless to say, this is my next step. I'm going to unistall everything ATI, run the registery cleaners, and put the AGP 8.12 hotfix back in. I hope the card moves to the AGP bus where it belongs and leaves the PCI bus alone.

At least this is less time consuming than starting all over again. Thanks for the info guys. Guess I'll be back in a while with the results.

@ Martin

The only thing I didn't do in your suggestions was to run my register cleaners (I have 3 and they always give different results) after I uninstalled & deleted anything that had the ATI name on it & after I uninstalled BOINC.

When I run DXDIAG, the dialog box informs me I'm at DirectX 10.0 (running XP SP3). I installed BOINC 6.6.20 because I have 2 machines (both dual core AMDs) running nVidia cards (2 GTX 260/216's & 2 GTX 280's) with BOINC 6.6.20 & my quad (twin AMD FX-74s) with 3 ATI HD4850s with BOINC 6.6.20 and haven't had any issues with scheduling, LTD, or STD, with the exception of running Seti@Home GPU when GPU Grid was down for 3 days. I believe that was because I was running a CPU project with Seti GPU & Seti went into a negative long term debt & short term debt situation. I got around that by suspending the CPU project until GPU Grid came back online and Seti went about its merry way without slowing down again.

BTW, this mobo is a Giabyte GA-K8U AMD 754 socket with an Athlon64 3400+ chip (single core) in it. Nothing is overclocked. All drivers have been updated to current drivers using Driver Agent. This is the only mobo I have that is 100% current. Also running XP SP3 as mentioned above.

Concerning the DirectX 10.0 download, I had McAfee anti virus running & Windows firewall running and never received any warnings about any virus. Graphics & 3D rendering look fantastic when I load the game that came with the card (The Witcher by Atari). I'm not a gammer, but I wanted to test the card with the DirectX 10.0 software (and the Cat 9.4 AGP hotfix) and it didn't disappoint me.

I've even loaded the Cat 9.4 AGP hotfix (mentioned above) on the machine and added the 3 amdcalcl, dd, & rt DDLs to the system 32 folder. CP (Cluster Physik) informed me this wouldn't run on XP, but I haven't had a problem with it yet.

I've had the output file absent (the write access issue) with the ATI_SSE2 opti app since DirectX 9.0c & the ATI Cat 8.12 AGP hotfix and I was just updating drivers to somehow get the message to disappear. No joy as of yet.

The 8.12 AGP hotfix (and 9.4) CCC have a SmartGart tool that will set the AGP bus for optimum performance & stability. But in both versions, it showed AGP off and at 0x speed and would not allow me to set it to 4x or 8x. PC Wizard confirmed that AGP on the AGP bus was disabled (it also has a AGP3 mode disabled). I'm beginning to believe this might be the root of my issue, but I can't confirm that. PC Wizard also shows me that the Northbridge chip on this mobo has a uli 3.0 AGP controller and that the AGP card is attached to PCI bus #0. The same NB chip also has the HT controller on it. I don't know why this is so, but the APG card is stuck in the AGP slot and, as I mentioned earlier, the game grapics, rendering, and movement are great. GPU-Z shows the buss interface as AGP 8x @ PCI.

If I can't figure out what called module is missing, I just might reformt the hard drive and reinstall Windows (Activation key willing) Saturday & Sunday. I've never had an easy install yet. This will really be my last option as I'm not looking forward to spending a week to put everything back on the machine.

Thanks for your suggestions & help. Maybe I'll get there someday.

Don't those 3 ATI files go in the Windows\system32 folder, and not in the MilkyWay folder?

I believe the 3 files you're referencing are the renamed files for Cat 9.2 & above.

The 3 files I put in the Milkyway folder were the ATI_SSE2 opti app, the app_info_xml, & the brook.ddl to have my APG card crunch Milkyway. Thanks.

Uninstalled .NET & updated with the .NET 3.5 SP1. It installed successfully.

I shut down BOINC and started task manager to insure all BOINC processes were not running & then put the 3 ATI files in the Milkyway file. Started BOINC and resumed 1 task.

I got the same write access error with the same addresses & return codes.

I guess I'll keep looking. Thanks for the help.

I'm not very experienced in interpreting such output, but for me it looks like amdcaldd.dll does not find a necessary module (another dll file it depends on).

From reading on the net, I kinda gathered it was a ddl that was called by amdcaldd (values passed to child by amdcaldd - RetAddr Args to Child
and returns a GetLastError = '126' (not found). This made me wonder about the 8.12 hotfix for AGP cards, but so far, everything else works with the card (even tried a game to see if it would die, but didn't). Since I had no idea what was missing, I screamed for help again.

This is most likely the .NET framework. It appears it is not correctly installed on your computer.
If you have already installed all .NET updates one finds on Windows update, I would try to remove the .NET framework completely and to install it again.

I have .NET 3.5 installed (after .NET 2.0 insatlled with the driver). I'll give the removal of all .NET versions and reinstall .NET 3.5. At least this won't take 6 forevers! I'll post results when it's been accomplished.

Thanks again CP!

40) Message boards : Number crunching : Need Help - HD3850 AGP & Cat 8.12 + (Message 20492)
Posted 26 Apr 2009 by Donnie
Post:
Well, if I can get a screen print from GPU-Z, everything is in order. Says I have my HD3850 AGP card and has Cat 8.12 drivers on it. I don't have the neat little tools I used to have at work (Snag it, Word, etc...), since I retired. It also says I have directX 10.1 SM 4.1, AGP interface at 8x, memory clock @ 669 MHz, 320 shaders, memory clock @ 829 MHz etc... Anything come to mind for the access issue? Thanks.
