The problem you are describing can happen if you have a lot of tasks on your system and you are displaying them all. If this is the case, you can "cure" it by going to the Tasks tab and pressing the "Show active tasks" button. (It will then change to "Show all tasks".)

Just sent some cash his way. Figured it's a good investment since I use the stats almost every day.

27) Message boards : Number crunching : ATI HD5850 cooling fan dying? (Message 45603)

Post:
I have a 4850 with an Accelero S1 w/turbo module on it (not currently being used) and the Accelero took something like 30 degrees off the stock cooling (which was admittedly pretty poor).
I also have Accelero Xtreme 5870s on 2 of my 5870 cards, they work extremely well for me, but do take up 3 slots. I've been thinking of getting a Scythe Setsugen HD5870/5850 for another 5870, it only takes up 2 slots. Reviews are pretty sparse on it, but I found one (on Fudzilla, I think) that said it did a good cooling job. It can be hard to find, though. Just some info to think about...

One thing I've noticed:
In the BOINC Manager, percent completed stays at 0% till completion time, then goes above 100% on this type of task for a few extra seconds:
11/10/2010 8:34:30 PM Milkyway@home Starting de_separation_82_2s_40_2_882564_1289403509_0
with the 40
Completion times are normal.
And my average is shooting up.
I think the 30 shows the percentage right.
The 20 is ok too.
I'll try to have a look at the other types.

Regards

Not on my systems, the _40_ tasks progress normally as do all the others...

I am sceptical because not only did he get 400,000 from milky way he actually got 3,406,890 in one day on all projects
it has taken me 17 months with a computer running permanemtly to get to just under half of this.
so he must have a machine well over 1000 times faster or over 1000 computers to get to this figure

Between all my projects, this is about a week of credit for me (the 3.4 Mil. amount), and I am not one of the real top crunchers... why do you think this guy is cheating, exactly?

(and as you can see, my RAC here is over 400K)

Yup, using one now. this computer has one in it. Have a couple others, too, but they're shut down now to save on electric bills.

You can click on my name and check out my computers, the 2 with the highest RAC have 5830s in them. 122K and 130K right now. I have a feeling they can do about 140 - 145/day when there's a ready supply of work (on this project), but I don't really track them. Looking at the Boincstats page for each computer, and subtracting about 4K/day for CPU tasks, that seems to be about right.

HTH

[Edit] Oh, one's a Sapphire, the other an HIS, and I run them both at 875/900, they generally maintain about a temp of 58-60.

It doesn't work completely correctly for me. When MW was down yesterday, I had a long period where 2 out of 3 machines had no GPU work. I have Collatz set to a 0 share, MW 100. Using 6.10.56 on the 2 that this didn't work on, using 6.10.43 on the other machine where it DID work promptly. To make matters worse, after a couple of hours of no work, I updated Collatz at the 2 idle machines and the messages tab showed "user requested update, not reporting tasks, not requesting new work". I left them alone after that and by this morning they all had work at Collatz, but I have no idea why they didn't get any sooner.

Correct, I'm using a 5830, also the 4770 can do MW, too. I have a couple of those also doing MW.

Maybe they think twice and order instead FIVE Raedon 5870
each with the same DP performence and for the same price

That is certainly a viable alternative, and for some people it will be the right choice (and that probably includes the majority of people here). But for others it won't be feasible, for a variety of reasons.

I looked at the prices of the HD 5870 on Amazon, The prices range from about $400 to about $500 before shipping, So the cost is not that low, While a HD 5770 costs around $150-$200 before shipping.

The 5770 can't do MW, and the original post the (top) above was a response to was comparing to the "professional" card,

Those who truly need the additional double precision will buy the professional card. Those who don't won't.

Based on the quote, the poster is referring to the Tesla card, which goes for $2499 retail, so that's about 5 HD 5870s...
