1) Message boards : Number crunching : Boinc 6.10.56 - backup project (Message 40020)

I read in the release notes of Boinc 6.10.56 that you can now setup a backup project by setting its resource share to 0.

OK let me understand this. If I want my ATI cards to only run Milkyway when there is work, then switch to Collatz when there isn't any work, all I have to do is set Collatz to zero resource share?

How will Boinc know that Milkyway now has work again, and switch back once the last Collatz workunit has been finished, and not to download any more?

It doesn't stop asking for Milkyway while it is crunching Collatz - so when it gets some new MW then it stops asking for Collatz. That's my interpretation, anyway...

... I may try .50 this week end ... I hope to upgrade my last systems to Win7-64 and add in the HD5870 that should be here any moment now ... UPS always seems to deliver late to me, to others on my block the deliveries always seem to come about 10AM ...

A watched pot never boils...

I believe it was "1066 and all that" where that was bowdlerised to "Watts pots never Boyle"...

Are these still happening? Can you link me any culprit WUs/Results?

Here's a couple where I am waiting for validation, wingmen are "inconclusive" but have not been sent out for a tie-breaker:

I don't know what's wrong Travis, but I'm not getting anything to work on.

You have to ask in order to receive. I guess your machine is paying off debt owed to SETI at this time.

I figured out how to regulate who gets what. I'm now set up to run Einstein on the cpu's, and MW on the gpu's. Both apps seem to favor the cruncher they're destined for.

I've got Seti and Climate Prediction sharing the CPU cores and MW and Seti sharing the GPU cores reliably (using Boinc 6.10.32).

It's been a bit now...no work available!

Hmmmm... My cache of 24 tasks is still being replenished regularly - every 15 mins or so. Maybe a stop/start or a reboot??

Only if they have an anonymous admin named "Fred".

And what's wrong with "Fred" :-((

Well it looks like I can change my preferences now, so let me know if the rest of you are having success (updating the project_specific_preferences might have done it).

After reading this I tried to create a "Home" profile; failed.

However, after editing and saving the "Default" profile I found that I could then successfully create and save a "Home" profile. Will have to wait a couple of hours for the box to crunch a newly downloaded WU to see if is now honouring the new profile (only change is the max CPU value for GPU crunching) but it looks like you may have cracked it at last.

Bad form, replying to my own post, but I suddenly realized my terminology was askew. For the avoidance of doubt, I was referring to successfully creating "Preferences for Home" rather than Home Profile.

I'll try and see what's up. This seems pretty strange. You can access your preferences, but changing them doesn't do anything?

Here's what I found:

The separate preferences for home had disappeared so I tried to add them. I set "Use GPUs for Computation" = yes and "Use CPU for Computation" = no; then saved the new Home preferences. No preferences for Home were displayed but the Default preferences for these to items had now changed to "Use GPUs for Computation" = no and "Use CPU for Computation" = yes (i.e. the reverse of what I had tried to set for the "Home" location). I then edited the Default preferences to enable computation on the GPUs but cannot set the "Use CPU for Computation" = no in the Default preferences.
