To get double precision in newer AMD cards, you have to lay out a fair amount of change (you can pick up used 4850's for under $60 - or $90 out of pocket if you elect to replace the heatsink/fan with something new). Besides, the top end double precision cards, besides being very expensive do draw quite a bit more power. I can run the 4850's with a solid 500W to 600W power supply easily, and figure if I went with the 6950 I'd have to push up the PS as well. Yes Peter... gotta be careful mate. I had 2 x 4770's running (still have them here in the "useful parts" drawer) and they are dbl precision.

The project has always been a tad too good on the GPU front for the level of hardware and general support it has to work with. Again, for me, the 'work around' was the happy finds of other projects (Collatz, Dnet - until the folks there got bored, Moowrapper) that support the ATI/AMD GPU's I run. Heck these days, for CPU projects there is a bit of dry spell for me (Spinhenge and POEM) -- so I've found myself reverting to some other 'tried and true' alternatives (Einstein, Malaria, Rosetta). Heck, I've even bumped up my CPU hit for SETI. Trust me these issues bother me as much as it does you guys, if not more.

As has been noted by myriads over the ages, with MW and its micro-queues, even short outages (and this one is a long outage) cause problems, especially for those souls with MW as their primary GPU project. I used to 'live there' -- burned often enough to have two alternates to work with these days. I had three alternates until the Dnetc folks got bored and shut down their project.

If you are running an ATI GPU configuration, there are a few options - but not astro oriented -- Collatz -- excellent stability there though the credit payout is lower than MW (for what its worth), or Moowrapper or Dnet. Those projects also work with CUDA GPU's as well (and all three of them do NOT require double precision GPU's). I originally started with SETI and stayed with them for many years. However, about 18 months ago, their application kept locking up and I started doing MW as my backup...then I quit SETI altogether due to the probs. I thought I had found a good project with MW ... Guess I'm going to have to look around and see what else I can find to give this machine something to do.
48) Message boards : News : Server Components Restored (Message 51076) Posted 15 Sep 2011 by BarryAZ Post: With this project in particular, outages like this have an immediacy that other projects don't encounter, the very short queue for GPU's means that within 30 minutes to an hour (perhaps even less) of an outage, there is no work to process. Other projects which support GPU's offer a much longer queue. I know this issue has been batted around for years (I first started doing work for this project back in the pre-GPU days of 2008), but it still is there. I guess the end user solution is to always have alternative GPU work available (for me that is Collatz, Moo, and Dnet since I run ATI GPU's).

(Message 50388) Posted 26 Jul 2011 by BarryAZ Post: I've gone to keeping a couple after market coolers on hand -- as OEM fans tend to be the short-lived component in the GPU's. I am mostly running 4850's though -- not as expensive (decent secondary market) and the first thing I check is the fans on those units -- I've replaced three so far in my collection.
