Wow - didn't have to wait long at all.
The first try was predictably the same.

The next try actually updated, and then promptly started downloading!

Thanks again!

OK - will try that. Update a few times.
I'll post again tomorrow. (Saturday)
Thanks!

OK - an update, for more information.
I'm running Boinc 7.0.28 on and old XP pro SP3 machine.
XP is up to date as of last Tuesday.
BOINC has been running famously on it for years, with my testing about 6 projects.
Is that of any help?

I can't seem to get going again after an absence on the project.
Could I get some help please?

Yup - same here.

I'll watch the speed that the server status page shows the "results in progress" declining.

As I said, I'm only stopping the flow to my computer until I can see results.
Once a week, when I run scans, clean up, and otherwise spend time with the computer, Milkyway can run.

I just can't babysit it 7 days a week. Each week I will be running work units, to see what improves. I have noticed a distinct lack of repeated errors in the last batch.

I liked the idea of this project, and that's why I joined. I have not quit.

I also liked another (left nameless) project that I had to quit after the pundits involved degraded AMD, NVidia, my OS, and my questions as trivial.

All my hardware and software has changed since then, and my new system would be ideal for it, but I doubt I'll try them again.

I've put Milkyway on suspension.

After a few months of nursing, I gave up. The constant errors and suggestions that it was my job to field and look for answers just rankled too much.

Finally, after many posts, messages, and days spent troubleshooting other peoples problems, I got one day of error-free processing. The server wouldn't accept the results.

I'll save Milkyway for the one day a week that I'm doing system maintenance anyway. Other projects have a notice posted when there's a repeating problem. Some of them even solve it promptly.

Hello,

Will the new version of BOINC (5.10.30) have any effect on the Milkyway app?

Hello,

Thanks for the encouragement, but I've been nursing this project on my computer for a number of months now, and am getting a might peeved.

I have (I'm told) a great tolerance in these areas, and normally I'll stick with a problem long after a lot people would give up. (tech support experience)

I admire the project, although I've seen no specific information on it, other than the general statement of purpose. Information on what sort of modeling, how it's done, what sort of results from these calculations, etc. would be nice. I've always wanted to see more astronomy modelling results like n-body simulations.

This is the only application in BOINC that's causing these problems, and after this many months, there should be some improvement that gets the errors out of our client. I can only imagine machines all over the continent (and further) doing what mine does.

I'll check in later.

Hi,

For the last month, I've had success with restarting BOINC for Milkyway units that are not progressing (or showing display progress?) in the BOINC client.

This has changed.

Yesterday, I saw two units "running", of which one was stalled. So I dutifully suspended operation, closed down BOINC peacefully, waited a bit, and then started BOINC up again. Both units were then showing no progress. I aborted them.

Today I have another unit that shows no progress, even after restarting BOINC.

The continued failure of these units takes away from other projects that could benefit from the use of all the Milkyway-assigned computer power.

My stats have been steadily falling since I joined, and I'm hoping improvements are coming.

Should I remain? (hopeful)

Hello,

I tried 1/1 for a day, and will set it back from the 0/4.

This is interesting.

Hi,

The resource share was set to 20%, since I have all those other projects.

The first due date for a SETI unit was 20/2/2008, so I'd have thought more recent work would take precedence. - my mistake.

I only got work after suspending all other projects.

I now have work. Thanks!

I'm now set at 0/4, hit the update.
I'll wait with connection on, and baited breath.

Now tried the 2 day, 2 extra day setting.

No work again.

I guess the next try is 3/3.

Hi,

Me, too.
I had changed my connect times from many days over the Christmas absence, to 1/1, and wasn't getting anything.

I've now changed to 2/2, and will see if that changes anything.
If someone has tested these settings, let me know.

Progress report to follow tomorrow.

coming up on that event, and another on the 29th, I believe.
We're getting an asteroid flyby about 1.4 x the distance to the moon.

I wonder if we'll see any news on the Mars incident coming up, though.

success!

final update. My uploads finally went.
I'm fairly sure I was a victim of the permissions, but then the WUs still didn't want to send by themselves.
After I rebooted my system, I was able to 'retry' the uploads, and it worked.

Hi,

Oops. Missed the ISP and network configuration question.
Freenet is my ISP, and I've been more than pleased with their service, manners, and answers to my questions.
I ran SETI for over 5 years on dial-up and now DSL with no issues I can blame on either Freenet or any of the 3 computers I've upgraded to in that time.
My network consists of one DSL box, with one network cable to my one computer.

I am running Vista Ultimate 64, which may put me in a small group running that OS. The processor is an Intel 6300 dual 1.86, if that's enough info.

Hello,

This is where I got my information.

From the LHC site:

Server status page
[As of 3 Jan 2008 17:48:58 UTC]

Server status
Program Host Status
Data-driven web pages hepboinc Running
Upload/download server hepboinc Disabled
Scheduler hepboinc Disabled

If I'm misinterpreting, I apologize.

As I reported earlier, SETI and Einstein WUs are uploading and downloading with no problem.
I just tested again, turning off both the firewalls in my DSL and Windows, and trying to 'retry' the upload- still not getting there.

Is there any other information I can pass along that might help?

Hi,

I just checked. The LHC servers are down, so that's the problem with those 2 uploads.
