41) Message boards : Number crunching : Experiences with ATI app at Folding@home?? (Message 16602)

I usually run BOINC + Folding@Home GPU client, i have a Q9550 and a ATI 3870, and it run VERY well

BOINC crunch his WU (only cpu of course) and Folding crunch happily his gpu WU, both without problem.

And well, i suggest to use Folding@home to keep busy your GPU, it run well, has WU pretty long, stable WU and, most important, it don't interfere with your computer use (with the ATI app milkyway make my pc...well, not usable), you can even play videogames without problem (but i suggest to pause it when gaming)

Installing it is VERY simple, download the client, install it and then put in a username and it will start crunching. I suggest you to go into the option and select "slightly higher" for the priority, so you are sure that the GPU will work always at 100% (your cpu will be used 5-10%) and that's all, happy crunching.

Uh, useless to say, DON'T use both Folding GPU and milkyway GPU lol :P

Thanks for the info try, good to know both programs will work at the same time... my two 4870 aren't doing anything for MW for lack of work to crunch so I'll give the Folding app a shot ;)

>> try- did you check the 'Do NOT lock cores to specific CPU' box? http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinGPUGuide ... systray installation method

Is anyone running or recently attempted to run the ATI app at F@H?
I was thinking of fiddling with it this weekend but am unclear as to whether you can even run BOINC MW gpu app and F@H ATI app at the same time or even the BOINC and F@H programs themselves simultaneously... has anyone done this and how did the setup process go as F@H looks much more involved to get running?

Mine are idle more than that, but the point is things were working nearly perfectly for a week or so and then began slipping again so the potential is there for better... my credit today dropped ~ 25% from yesterday... the project appears in a holding pattern with Travis being incommunicado...

It's been many days since the 'great fix' and subsequent slide into 'got 0 new tasks' hell...
Any update from the project staff as to what is being done to get us back to work aplenty?
Thanks

I think we may need to separate the database from the actual server software. They're both on the same hard disk. The server hardware is excellent. We have 8gb of ram. I think a new hard drive would greatly increase the speed however I'm not sure what type it is. I'm almost positive it's SCSI but don't know the details.

Dave:
Just let us know what specifically you need and where to ship it and I'm sure you'll be receiving a package by UPS very quickly :)
I hope Travis is OK and not just off snowboarding somewhere...

I'll just throw this out for consideration... I have no idea of the financial resources available to the project or if it's even necessary but if it would help with the current growing pains I would certainly contribute a few bucks towards a dedicated MW server or whatever was required as done at SETI.
If accepting money was a problem maybe a list of needed equipment could be posted.

Machines are running dry and requesting 170,000 sec of new work- getting 0 new tasks... machines are running dry and for some reason are starting to request 0 new work and are of course getting 0 new work and then are not attempting to reconnect for more work... all machines are dry at least 2-3 times per day even with manual intervention... this is as bad as it's been IMHO- and it was running great after the fix of a couple weeks ago...BAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Travis- wherefore art thou?!

Another quad machine (XP Home) dry this am (CPU app) :(
Out of 8 manual primes for new work only one successfully returned new work and then it was only 6 WU's- the other 7 attempts > ' got 0 new tasks'... it had not 'called home' for 1 hour and was not scheduled for another attempt for another hour- so 2 hours sitting with completed WU's and no further attempts to get more work.
With further manual primes it is now back to full allotment of 24 WU's... it seems that it is a bit of bad luck timing to run dry but obviously there are many, many times when the server is not doling out new work for whatever reason.

There seem to be many more 'got 0 new work' multiple times in succession again and I had one machine dry (CPU app) at work this am. Most machines manage to get something and keep the cache alive but the frequency of the 'got 0 new tasks' seems to be increasing slowly day by day for me anyway. Also, it may request 140,000 seconds of new work but only get 1 task in return- that happens a lot, so more often then not it's not running with the maximum 24 tasks on deck...

The only problem- and it's a big one- is when you have 'got 0 new tasks' multiple times in a row, which does still happen, and run dry and the reconnect time goes to 2 or 3 hours and you have nothing to crunch until then... any way to change/fix(?) that?

It depends on what mean by 'fix'.

If you are talking about MW being able to feed work to the scheduler faster, then no, not until Monday at the earliest.

If you're talking about not running dry, then you have two choices:

1.) Sit at the console all the time and pound on the update button when you are out.

2.) Run a backup project and just ride out these difficulties until a satisfactory backend fix can be implemented.

Alinator

I think he was talking about the 3 hour delay.

'If you are talking about MW being able to feed work to the scheduler faster...'
I'm not.

'I think he was talking about the 3 hour delay.'
I was.

I know have work on all computers and including the GPU where I was getting practically nothing.

Server-side, it looks like the change helped work availability quite a bit.

I still run out of work, two CPU apps dried up over the last 3 hours left to their own devices. The small WU queue did improve the situation a lot though.
This is with a 4870- not so good:

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would say the work available is decreasing each day- whatever the problem is, it's getting worse... 8,10,12 manual attempts in a row all get '0 new tasks'... machines are regularly running dry...
I know you are working on it :)
