I just had an electrician install a new plug in my "still in renovation basement" I have a computer that has been collecting dust for a few years now.
It's got XP still on and a ATI 4770. Do I need new drivers for it (old drivers were crunching about 100K/Day at stock BOINC. No XML file or anything to "help" it. Can I just re-install the latest version of BOINC and start crunching again?

I'd guess that you'll need new drivers as well. See here to download them:

Since you have XP you CAN NOT go past version 12.1 and still crunch! You can see that in the chart on this page, as well as download the drivers at the very bottom of the page.

However using the latest version of Boinc shouldn't be a problem, I am using 7.2.33 on my XP machine with no problems. You can always get the full list of Boinc version here, including the Alpha, Beta and Release version:

Ok thank you so much.

I have 12.6 and found 12.1 on softpedia.
I could not download from bottom link as it was giving me the latest version only.

Also whenever I install Boinc latest version or older my computer crashes as soon as the window pops on after the install. So I am not sure what's going on.

I will uninstall 12.6 and put back 12.1 on when I can get Boinc to work.

On a side note, I may get win7 for this system since XP is almost out and if I open my wallet a bit more I may buy a newer card for it as well. Is there a forum I could get to, to view what cards crunch what (approximation) on a daily basis? Or my 4870 is just fine? (I originally put 4770 but it was a typo mistake in the first post). It is a 4870.

I am glad it is now crunching again for you!!

As for new gpu's the thing to remember for AMD cards is the 'stream processors', the more of those a card has the faster it will process units! Nvidia cards are similar but not exactly the same. Here is a small chart I have made up over the years to help me when I am looking to buy:

The yes and no column refers to whether or not it will crunch for MilkyWay or not. I am guessing the newest R series of AMD cards will but have not seen confirmation yet, so that part is blank for now. The numbers refer to the 'stream processors' on each card. Nvidia calls them 'shaders' and as I said earlier they are NOT exactly comparable AMD to Nvidia that way. But the more shaders the better the card. A 'stream processor' is sort of like a mini cpu, so the more of them the faster the card can crunch, or game.

You are very wrong with your assumption that only the amount of stream processors matters, especially for projects like MW, which require double-precision (DP).
Certain GPU SKUs have limited DP performance (1/2, 1/4, 1/8 of the single-precision performance), some of them don't support DP at all. Usually workstation series GPUs have full DP performance, whereas some higher-end mainstream GPUs have solid DP performance as well (like the Tahiti PRO/XT).
Check the DP performance tables of various GPUs for comparison.

And I too am getting more and more of the Tahiti type gpu's in my own ranch. I have two now and two more under the Christmas tree waiting for me.

No, that series does not support Double Precision, which this project requires.

I have the Geforce GTX 260 card, and with windows 7 Ultimate. And the CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo on 2,80 Ghz. I can see that basicly all of my Milkyway@home packages are calculated/crunched with errors ("Computation error"). I have just installed the windows 7 Ultimate because of a change from HDD to an Samsung SSD 250 GB. So that's also why Boinc and the NVidia drivers is brand new (Boinc ver.7.2.42 (x64) and NVIDIA ver. 340.52).

Erhm...Is a old member of Seti@home, but new to Milkyway@home. Hope you can sort this problem out with "Computation Error" somehow if possible.

BTW, is it possible to have some kind of graphic or screensaver to Milkyway@home?

Plus, where can you see the result of the 3D model of the universe? I have 3D Studio Max, and Maya, and Google Earth is that's possible to view with it. But I guess you're using some other kind of software to view it.

It is surprising, but the Radeon HD7000 support CAL (Tahiti - Pitcairn/Curacao - Cape Verde - Oland)....stop support with GCN2 (Hawaii - Bonaire - Tonga)

Is there a R9-285 on duty here?
Can anyone post the performance of this card? I could not find any hints for DP performance.

I found this in the BOINC wiki:

Add new Windows version descriptions.
Add support for Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite)
Add support for Windows 10

Will this help get the new cards running?
