Yes, Milkyway runs fine on the CPUs (Core 2 Duo E4300) but I would like the GPU to compute as well :)

Try this thread, maybe you too need the file he is using?

I just had an electrician install a new plug in my "still in renovation basement" I have a computer that has been collecting dust for a few years now.
It's got XP still on and a ATI 4770. Do I need new drivers for it (old drivers were crunching about 100K/Day at stock BOINC. No XML file or anything to "help" it. Can I just re-install the latest version of BOINC and start crunching again?

I'd guess that you'll need new drivers as well. See here to download them:

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

If you need to find the latest version of BOINC, see here:

Since you have XP you CAN NOT go past version 12.1 and still crunch! You can see that in the chart on this page, as well as download the drivers at the very bottom of the page.
http://www.hal6000.com/seti/boinc_ati_gpu_cheat_sheet.htm

However using the latest version of Boinc shouldn't be a problem, I am using 7.2.33 on my XP machine with no problems. You can always get the full list of Boinc version here, including the Alpha, Beta and Release version:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=D

While the different change logs can be found here:

Ok thank you so much.

I have 12.6 and found 12.1 on softpedia.
I could not download from bottom link as it was giving me the latest version only.

Also whenever I install Boinc latest version or older my computer crashes as soon as the window pops on after the install. So I am not sure what's going on.

I will uninstall 12.6 and put back 12.1 on when I can get Boinc to work.

On a side note, I may get win7 for this system since XP is almost out and if I open my wallet a bit more I may buy a newer card for it as well. Is there a forum I could get to, to view what cards crunch what (approximation) on a daily basis? Or my 4870 is just fine? (I originally put 4770 but it was a typo mistake in the first post). It is a 4870.

Martin

(UPDATE) After taking 12.6 off and re-installing 12.1 Catalyst, I was able to load BOINC without crashing the computer and it started to crunch right away at stock. I will see how it does and will updated you guys on the average crunching at stock (no apps or nothing)

I am glad it is now crunching again for you!!

As for new gpu's the thing to remember for AMD cards is the 'stream processors', the more of those a card has the faster it will process units! Nvidia cards are similar but not exactly the same. Here is a small chart I have made up over the years to help me when I am looking to buy:

card type-MW capable shaders
Nvidia 8600 GT- no 128
Nvidia 9800 GT/512meg- no 112
Nvidia 9600 GSO/ 512meg- no 64
Nvidia GTX 560Ti-yes 384
Nvidia 650Ti-yes 768
Nvidia 660-yes 1344
Nvidia 670- yes 1344
Nvidia 680-yes 1536
Nvidia 690-yes 3072
Nvidia 770-yes 1536
ATI 4650 AGP-no 320
ATI 4670-no 320
ATI 5550-no 320
AMD 5770-no 800
AMD 5870-yes 1600
AMD 6770-no 800
AMD 6850-no 960
AMD 6870-no 1120
AMD 6950-yes 1408
AMD 6970-yes 1536
AMD 7750-yes 512
AMD 7770-yes 640
AMD 7790-yes 896
AMD 7850-yes 1024
AMD 7870-yes 1280
AMD 7950-yes 1792
AMD 7970-yes 2048
AMD 7990-yes 4096
AMD R7 260x 896
AMD R9 270x 1280
AMD R9 280x 2048
AMD R9 290x 2816

The yes and no column refers to whether or not it will crunch for MilkyWay or not. I am guessing the newest R series of AMD cards will but have not seen confirmation yet, so that part is blank for now. The numbers refer to the 'stream processors' on each card. Nvidia calls them 'shaders' and as I said earlier they are NOT exactly comparable AMD to Nvidia that way. But the more shaders the better the card. A 'stream processor' is sort of like a mini cpu, so the more of them the faster the card can crunch, or game.

You are very wrong with your assumption that only the amount of stream processors matters, especially for projects like MW, which require double-precision (DP).
Certain GPU SKUs have limited DP performance (1/2, 1/4, 1/8 of the single-precision performance), some of them don't support DP at all. Usually workstation series GPUs have full DP performance, whereas some higher-end mainstream GPUs have solid DP performance as well (like the Tahiti PRO/XT).
Check the DP performance tables of various GPUs for comparison.

You are correct, there ARE many other factors that come into play then just the amount of stream processors!! Those 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 DP performance numbers are only on Nvidia gpu's, I believe, and do hinder some of the gpu's from them a bit on MilkyWay. And I too am getting more and more of the Tahiti type gpu's in my own ranch. I have two now and two more under the Christmas tree waiting for me.

They are on the AMD GPU's as well, the 7xxx series shows it in spades.

38xx=1/5
47xx=1/5
48xx=1/5
58xx=1/5
69xx=1/4
77xx=1/16
7790=1/14

7870=1/16
7870xt=1/4
79xx=1/4
r7=1/16
r9-270=1/16
r9-280=1/4
r9-290=1/8

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

Right now, it looks like the 7990, the 7970 and the r9-280x will be the fastest card for crunching here.

I don't think any of the 8xxx series has been released.

The 8xxx were rebrands of 7xxx for OEM only.

DARN IT, and here I was trying to buy just AMD cards to avoid that!!

I am trying to run Milkyway@home on the GPU on my HP Probook 4540. I know that it is capable of running at least some projects because I am presently running Seti@home on it. The GPU is an CAL AMD Radeon HD 6570/6670/7570/7670 series (Turks) (1024MB) driver: 1.4.1848.

Is it possible to run Milkyway@home on this GPU and if so how.

No, that series does not support Double Precision, which this project requires.

1xRadeon HD5970 (4640 GFLOP SP - 930 GFLOP DP)
1xGeForce GTX660 Ti (2460 GFLOP SP - 105 GFLOP DP)

For the cards, I have these models:

2xGeForce GTX280 (1300 GFLOP SP - 192 GFLOP DP)
1xGeForce GTX260 (477 GFLOP SP - 54 GFLOP DP)
1xGeForce 9800 GX2 (768 GFLOP SP)
1xGeForce 8800 ULTRA (387 GFLOP SP)
1xRadeon HD4870 X2 (2400 GFLOP SP - 480 GFLOP DP)
1xRadeon HD4870 (1200 GFLOP SP - 240 GFLOP DP)
1xRadeon HD3870 X2 (1060 GFLOP SP - 215 GFLOP DP)
1xRadeon HD3870 (500 GFLOP SP - 100 GFLOP DP)

I have the Geforce GTX 260 card, and with windows 7 Ultimate. And the CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo on 2,80 Ghz. I can see that basicly all of my Milkyway@home packages are calculated/crunched with errors ("Computation error"). I have just installed the windows 7 Ultimate because of a change from HDD to an Samsung SSD 250 GB. So that's also why Boinc and the NVidia drivers is brand new (Boinc ver.7.2.42 (x64) and NVIDIA ver. 340.52).

Erhm...Is a old member of Seti@home, but new to Milkyway@home. Hope you can sort this problem out with "Computation Error" somehow if possible.

BTW, is it possible to have some kind of graphic or screensaver to Milkyway@home?

Plus, where can you see the result of the 3D model of the universe? I have 3D Studio Max, and Maya, and Google Earth is that's possible to view with it. But I guess you're using some other kind of software to view it.
Thanks... Regards from Tom Pedersen

Benchmark GPU (When i can):
*Radeon R9-290 [OpenCL] (947/1250) => 36 s
*Radeon HD7970 Ghz Edition [OpenCL] (1050/1500) => 47 s
*Radeon HD7970 Ghz Edition [CAL] (1050/1500) => 274 s
*Radeon HD6970 [OpenCL] (880/1375) => Not yet tested
*Radeon HD6970 [CAL] (880/1375) => Not yet tested
*Radeon HD5870 [OpenCL] (850/1250) => Not yet tested (Prob fan)
*Radeon HD5870 [CAL] (850/1250) => Not yet tested (Prob fan)
*Radeon HD4870 [OpenCL] (750/900) => Not yet tested (Bad detection OpenCL)
*Radeon HD4870 [CAL] (750/900) => 1020 s (This strange)
*Radeon HD3870 [CAL] (777/1125) => 254 s
*GeForce GTX660 Ti [OpenCL] (980/1502) => 307 s
*GeForce GTX580 [OpenCL] (772/1002) => 324 s
*GeForce GTX280 => Impossible - Error

It is surprising, but the Radeon HD7000 support CAL (Tahiti - Pitcairn/Curacao - Cape Verde - Oland)....stop support with GCN2 (Hawaii - Bonaire - Tonga)

Is there a R9-285 on duty here?
Can anyone post the performance of this card? I could not find any hints for DP performance.
Thanks!

I found this in the BOINC wiki:
Changes in 7.4.26/7.4.27

Add support for notices that contain images and videos.
Add support for generic OpenCL devices. (Parallella, etc.)
Add support for ASIC Miners.
Add new AMD GPU descriptions.
Add new Windows version descriptions.
Add support for Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite)
Add support for Windows 10

Will this help get the new cards running?
