I'm creating this thread as a way to point to the Science Summary page from the forums, and also as a default thread for short questions related to that page. Longer (or more involved questions) deserve their own thread!

The Science Summary seems very out-dated. For example "and the results will be published in the Astrophysical Journal soon (March-April 2013)".

When will it be updated?

I agree, it'd be nice to know where we are progress-wise. Or what we're currently working on, without trawling through the forums. Also another example:

Milkyway@home is currently studying the North Galactic cap streams that are not Sagittarius. . .the Separation project should be complete in late-2013 to mid-2014.

So, it should be finished by now, even with delays. So...what is my brand new laptop working on?

I think so too. Just started milkyway again after quite some time and also realized the science page hasn't currently been updated. Maybe this can be worked on?

If you look 'Matthew' the person who started this page is no longer crunching, the problem may be that no one else is willing to take on his duties. Other Project Admins have quit crunching here too, this could be a dying project.

Looking forward to some 'official' notice that crunching data for MilkyWay@home still is of value. Once I've hit apprx. 1M I'll be moving on to another project and will only continue with MW@h if real value is confirmed - no point is using compute resource if the project has become a 'zombie'.

Read the News section, the problems aren't that the data isn't valuable, the problem seems to stem from lack of money to keep the databases running like they want them to be.

Only a part of data isn't valuable (gpus are ok) and admins are working on.
They are not absent, but seems that are not interested in updating scientific section

It seems most of Distributed Computing seems to have the issue of Lack of communication. They keep the servers running but lack in the resources to keep the crunchers informed on what is happening with all the work that is returned.

That is 3 years. The reason most of us participate is to be part of something that would be totally unavailable to us otherwise. For all we know our reults are being dumped in the trash as soon as we return them. I suspect this is not the case but I see no evidence to the contrary.

Lets raise our voices and push for some feedback. There is no reason we should not be kept informed of all the hard work we put into this project.

Hey Cactus Bob,

We are currently working on several publications, but our project staff is a bit stretched at the moment. Nbody is under considerable development with hard work going into getting a working GPU client, a new dwarf galaxy model and a new optimization metric. Separation has finished most of its client development as of last spring, but in recent times, I have been working on improving the server side optimization methods to better search our parameter space.

A reason there has been a long gap in publication is Sidd and I have both been working hard to develop, test, deploy, and run several iterations of our code to try to get separation and Nbody to give scientifically significant results. We have collectively fixed many issues with our optimizer and respective client codes.

With all of that said, I should have a paper submitted for publication using the results from my runs by the end of February, then I will be working on my thesis for August and then another journal publication shortly after that. We are not trying to be opaque or keep information from you. Sidd and I are very busy working towards getting results and publications and sometimes we neglect answering the forums or updating webpages. Sorry for that.

Jake, Thanks for the response, it is much appreciated. I understand projects like this are usually understaffed and overworked. There is usually a solution to any problem if time can be found to address it.

Is it possible to get an undergrad who is involved in communications or Tech of some sort to spend a few hours a week addressing this? If the budget allows some sort of stipend that would make the position all the more desirable. Just an idea.

Again thank you for the time to respond, it will go a long way to insure us crunchers keep crunching.
