And what I'm assuming is "a lot" of electricity required to power the GPUs to do work that will have no scientific value. Couldn't have said it better. And look at all the waste those windmills produce when they have reached their end of use date. They are huge and are buried. Talk about pollutants. Very inefficient method if you concider it all. |

A beer on me to all of the posters.Do you have any Balkan 176 Vodka? 88% :-) The above was double spaced between sentences, I apologise for the forum software ruining my post. |

So when is it going to be shut down then? |

When somebody works out how. Boinc server is not the simplest of things. The above was double spaced between sentences, I apologise for the forum software ruining my post. |

What was that about "the simplest of things" Now then , how could some dim bint like me `shutdown` a server ;-) "where does that wire go" , Oop`s I have tripped over it and it`s gone kinda quiet . I need a socket for the vacume cleaner . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . my hair drier . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . My phone needs recharged The list is as long as a todo list for a husband . And those are just the none destructive ways A nice conductive cup of tea , coffee or that pint from the other thread . |

Unfortunately n-body and separation are on the same hardware and it is not possible to pull the plug on separation without touching n-body. |

this might be obvious but i will mention it anyway: in most enterprise and or scientific environments servers are not bespoke consumer pc's those are dedicated platforms, often configured in a specific way. one physical server can and usually does run multiple components such as database engine, work generator or website frontend. physically shutting down the system will bring it ALL down not just "not needed anymore" stuff. and to bring offline certain modules which are interconnected to other subsystems like say a database is no trivial matter and must be done slowly and with precision to avoid data corruption, which is not a trivial matter especially if the admin team is small. Bear in mind that a scientist using the data does NOT have to understand how the core BOINC server operates. |

Unfortunately n-body and separation are on the same hardware and it is not possible to pull the plug on separation without touching n-body. If you go into your MW preferences on the web site here and untick Separation it will stop sending them to you. The N-Body will continue on as normal. |

Unfortunately n-body and separation are on the same hardware and it is not possible to pull the plug on separation without touching n-body. I am pretty sure that user is running both Separation and N-Body tasks on their hosts. They think the only way to stop separation is to tell MW to not use GPU. Which MW will still use the CPU on separation tasks. Unticking Separation in the "Run only the selected applications" section of the MW @ Home Preferences page will block separation from being sent to that host for both GPU and CPU. While still allowing the host to download N-Body. The user can then just abort any separation tasks that have downloaded so their host only runs N-Body. |

What was that about "the simplest of things"That sorta thing happened in the school I worked in. Cleaner plugging in a hoover, girls plugging in hairdryers after PE, teacher plugging in a fanheater. Sorted it, I changed the breakers to less sensitive ones, illegally. The above was double spaced between sentences, I apologise for the forum software ruining my post. |

this might be obvious but i will mention it anyway:I think Clair was being silly as she usually is :-) But my point was Boinc is unnecessarily complicated, it should be a matter of unticking the seperation box on the generator, but I bet you have to type 7 secret commands carefully and precisely into a horrid command line somewhere, get one wrong and Nbody disappears. Concur. I just returned from vacation and long fetched data to stay busy while I was gone. Now I optimized to just crunch my queued Separation assignments. Hope I am not wasting money |

I just replaced a melted connection. Do not run MW on 12 GPUs running through a 400 amp system and connect things with P clips. Steel is a rubbish conductor. I've changed them to hoseclips, which while they're still steel, the wires touch each other and conduct properly. Your skills as an electrician are incredible a true `sparky` if anyone breaks into your house and searches it THEY`R DEAD , ok I know it`s (mostly) only 12 volts , but we seen da photo`s in other threads ;-) |

So I gather it wasn't actually turned off today? And no word about it either... EIther way, I switched to Asteroids@home, suspending the existing MW WUs earlier today. Wonder if at least they'll be aborted by server when it will be shut down, or they'll be left dangling until users either abort all remaining ones themselves or crunch them for nothing... As for Asteroids, nice RAM use, some 7.5 Mb / WU. But sure shows how much MW was inflating credits, Asteroids WUs seem to take 25% longer and award 4-5 times less. Weird estimated computation size though, 33 times more than for MW, definitely can't be right. |

12 volts won't give you an electrical shock but it can melt wires and start a fire if circuit shorted or overloaded. connectors are often the weak link. if they aren't making good contact, they can heat up, melt and/or burn. be careful |

But if I want to keep someone out I don't use 240V. 2500V at 1kW should zap most people instantly. You just need to sabotage a microwave oven. Used it once and it worked well. I'll leave it up to you to decide if it was on a person, an animal, or a piece of electronics. but we seen da photo`s in other threads ;-)I know what I'm doing, I just lack the girly health and softy gene. Functionality yes. Safety no. Aesthetics no. The above was double spaced between sentences, I apologise for the forum software ruining my post. |

So I gather it wasn't actually turned off today? And no word about it either...Are you talking about the credits for Nbody or Seperation? I got massive credits for seperation, but that's because I had old DP cards. How did you switch to Asteroids? They only do CPU work (and Nvidia, but no faster than a CPU so pointless).
